Great link! My fav (other than the last line you already quoted): "facts are facts, and they are precious, but they can work in this way or that. Facts alone are not enough. You have to change the ideological background."

I completely agree. Its not that there are not facts (Zizek is against the postmodernist here) but that the facts are not enough. They are not. This is my main issue with much that falls under the banner of science, which tends to insist that the facts are enough, that they speak for themselves. They do not.

Hey, if it works out like that, I'll be mighty pleased. However, it is weird to award someone for something they *might* do because I'd like them to do it, even as they are clearly acting in a way that is NOT the way I want them to.

Well...flip-flop, flip-flop! ;)

Check this out (from the decision source):

Of course - there are many, many others who may be more deserving in concrete, practical terms...but, nonetheless, this seems a BIG, broad statement to the world and a HUGE challenge to live up to promises ("overall principles") and the expectations & hopes of so many.

Eric, I like the phronetic dialectic you espouse here, one that feels its way toward metaphysics, but I think this is more you than Caputo. I take him literally saying "post-metaphysical" as "giv[ing] up searching for all such primordial underlying somethings or other." As always, I am excited and inspired by Caputo's affirmation of life, the "oui, oui" (to pun a line, he is Nietzsche with the soul of Christ). But if we neglect metaphysics, than the difference between Caputo and Zizek is only aesthetic opinion on how to posture one's life. I find this to be very different, and lessor, than the phronetic dialectical metaphysics (to coin a cumbersome phrase) that you seem to be working through in your writing.

Other than 2) and 3), which I won't exactly say are "sweet", the rest of these (even Carter) smell so badly that I had to spray the monitor with Lysol.

Eric, I listened to some of the MP3 and I believe his problem deals mainly with sourcing Lithium. The main source right now is Chile. there are others such as China, but i didn't see any in the US. Anyway Lithium is a major component in the batteries of hybrid autos and other electrical storage and if that technology takes off big time there could be problems in the mining and supply. the MIT "invention" outlined in the attached shows there are other ways to store the energy and later use it.
Local capture of the sun's energy is still a good way to think about sustainable living as opposed to living in the GE and Westinghouse future they touted in the 50's where all things were electrified.
Web address for a non lithium soution:

Mr Friedman points out some interesting facts. While the US is behind in incentives (government or otherwise) we are starting to see more incentives for power companies and consumers to use solar and other "renewable" energy forms.

And the good news here is that manufacturing of solar panels is not the only place jobs are created and economies are turned green. Solar power is best produced close to the point of consumption.

Thus many local jobs are created to install and integrate the panels to the local grid. There is also ongoing maintenance of those panels.. In the end the panels help our economy operate on local power... so it is not all bad news..

NPR Morning Edition had a two-part series on the health CARE issue.

First part - Value over Volume - offer incentives to encourage people to lead healthier lives?:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112440591&ps=rs

Second part - Get rid of fee for service - treat each patient individually - an experiment in Minnesota:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112488466

And from the NYTimes article by Michael Pollan - "We are (health-wise and therefore health care-wise) what we eat":

irony?

received this in my inbox this morning from the Kabbalah Centre :

Monday, August 24

If we woke up everyday knowing everything we have is on loan, it would be a lot easier to be happy and to give.

>>>>Today, live with this consciousness. Find ways to share who you are and what you have - physically and emotionally.<<<<
